What We Do

The Workplace Rehabilitation Engineering and Research Center (Work RERC) identifies, develops and promotes new assistive and universally designed technologies that maximize independence and participation of people with disabilities in the workplace. A primary focus of the Workplace RERC is the use of universal design concepts -- the design of products and environments to be usable by all workers, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.

What is a RERC?

Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers (RERCs) apply engineering, advanced technology, scientific achievement and psychological and social knowledge to solve rehabilitation problems and remove environmental barriers. NIDRR, part of the U.S. Department of Education, funds over twenty centers, and each is affiliated with one or more institutions of higher education or nonprofit organizations. RERCs seek to find and evaluate the newest technologies, products, and methods that ultimately can benefit the independence of persons with disabilities and the universal design of environments for people of all ages.
